>> Chetnole Flower Show
The Chetnole Fete and Flower Show s a true celebration of village life, and one that involves almost all members of the community in some way. It is slightly unusual in that it incorporates two elements: one, a traditional Flower Show, consisting of 92 classes of vegetables and fruit, flowers, domestic classes, handicrafts, amateur paintings and photography, all held in a large marquee, judged by external experts and trophies awarded; and secondly, it is a village fete with side shows such as the Human Fruit Machine, coconut shy, and welly wanging, plus trade stalls, live music, a fun dog show, children’s events, a Pimms Stall, teas, and much more.
The Show is held in the Village Hall and the field next to it (by kind permission of Ed and Catharine Pyke) and takes place on the first Saturday of August each year, between 2 and 4:30 pm. (this year 4 August 2018) Entrance is £1 for adults, and free for children.
It is run by a committee of local residents, elected each year at the AGM, who volunteer to organise the event for the community. In addition to the Show itself, the committee usually organises a fund-raising event in the Spring, such as a Quiz Night or Bingo Night, to raise enough to offset some of the costs.
The money raised at the Fete and Flower Show all goes to local charities and organisations. In previous years these have included the Chetnole Defibrillator Fund, St. Peter’s Church, the Brownies and Guides, and many other local charities. If any local charity or organisation would like to apply for a donation, they should get in touch with the Chairman or Treasurer.
We welcome anyone who would like to get involved by running a stall, helping with teas, setting up the field, or in any other way. If so, please get in touch with a member of the committee.
