Chetnole Chuckers Petanque Club
The idea of forming a pétanque club was born out of a casual conversation in The Chetnole Inn, sometime in early 2005. A group of like-minded residents, relatively new to Chetnole and not long retired, were discussing village activities. The lovely setting of the playing field was mentioned, with the wistful rider that its sporting amenities did not cater for the older generation. Tennis courts and a bowling green were dismissed as too costly, then someone suggested making a village pétanque terrain, on the grounds that many people of a certain age have a set of boules at home, gathering dust. Another person then came up with the name ‘Chetnole Chuckers’.
The idea took hold and after lengthy approaches to a dubious Parish Council, funds were made available from the Development Fund to cover the cost of excavation and materials. A terrain was built in the Autumn and the club was formally established on 19th October 2005. It was agreed that it should be available for use by any resident at any time, except when required by the Chuckers for their regular social games on Wednesdays and Sundays, special events, and for matches against visiting teams. The playing season usually lasts from Spring until Autumn, weather dependent as always.
Regular sessions became so popular that by 2007, the terrain had to be widened so that three games could be played simultaneously. Once again the Parish Council came up trumps. Achieving an improved facility prompted the Chuckers to play matches against nearby villages, and the club joined the Dorset Twinning Pétanque League in 2008. The club acquitted itself well for three seasons before deciding to leave the League. That experience generated many contacts in the West Dorset pétanque fraternity, and the Chuckers have continued to play friendly matches against other clubs, who always enjoy an outing to Chetnole - especially if there is the prospect of lunch at the pub to follow!
To encourage local youngsters to enjoy the simple game of pétanque, a Junior Tournament was organized in Summer 2008, for about two dozen children aged 5 to 15 years. This also proved to be popular, and it has become an annual event.
Anyone is welcome to join the club for a modest annual subscription, currently £6.00 per person.
Pétanque is a fun activity for all ages – learning to play takes all of five minutes….but acquiring devastating skill takes a mite longer!
